Functional Foods A $275 Billion Market

Many of us have become far more health conscious.

We’re eating better than ever before.

All because we want to look better, feel better, and even think better.

“Even before the [health scare], many people around the U.S. were beginning to dabble in proactive and preventative health and wellness practices,” according to Wendy Liebmann, CEO of WSL Strategic Retail.  “What this [health scare] has revealed is that taking care and control of your own health — individual, family, home, etc. — is even more critical than before.”

In fact, in an effort to address specific health concerns and performance needs, boost immune systems, increase day-to-day productivity, and even focus, millions of people are turning to superfoods and functional mushrooms, for example.

The best part  — those millions of people are creating a massive market.

  • The functional food market could be worth $275.77 billion by 2025, expanding at a whopping 7.9% annually, says Global View Research.
  • Functional mushroom demand is growing exponentially, forecast to rise from about $23 billion to about $34 billion in the next four years. By 2025, functional mushrooms could be worth nearly $50 billion.
  • Recent data from Food Navigator shows an 800% demand increase for key mushroom varieties, with demand currently outstripping supply.
